GALAEI - Remembering Pulse: 1 Year Anniversary

There was a gathering at GALAEI that was both solemn and joyful on Monday June 12, 2017 - the one year anniversary of the deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman in U.S. history, and the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil since the events of September 11, 2001. Forty-nine people were killed and 53 were injured at Pulse Nightclub - many from the Orlando LGBTQ and Latin@ community. At GALAEI, a queer Latin@ social justice organization the names of the 49 were read out loud by those present. Nikki Lopez, Executive Director said Pulse was club where black and brown queer people could dance, be free, could love, could lust, could have heartbreak. Lopez says it was only fitting that this memorial took place at GALAEI which is a safe, multi-cultural, supportive space "unwavering in our commitment to the advancement ‘de nuestra familia’ through leadership and economic development, sexual empowerment and grassroots organizing.
