Pride of Philly: The Roots

The Roots are a hip hop group, formed in 1987 by Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter and Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Roots are known for a jazzy and eclectic approach to hip-hop, featuring live musical instruments. They have released 11 studio albums with one more on the way in 2020, two EPs, and three collaboration albums (one with John Legend, one with Betty Wright, and one with Elvis Costello). The Roots have also broken major records in the music world naming them "Hip-hop's first legitimate band". They are currently the house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The Roots have won three GRAMMY Awards and three NAACP Image Awards.

The Roots partner with the CAPA Foundation to help provide opportunities for students to learn show business and perform in front of national audiences. Questlove also works with Harlem Village Academies which helps students from financially challenged households achieve high goals academically.
