Pride of Philly: Musiq Soulchild

Musiq Soulchild was born on September 16, 1977 in Philadelphia, PA and grew up in a strict Muslim family. Musiq began singing and beatboxing on the streets and at open mics, and developed a reputation as "that music dude." He drew influence from many great soul artists who preceded him, including Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. In 2000, Musiq released his debut album, Aijuswanaseing, which had the song "Love." In 2002, Musiq Soulchild's 2nd album, Juslisen hit #1 on the Billboard charts and went platinum. His next album, Soulstar, came out in 2003 and was certified gold. After taking a little break, Musiq Soulchild also changed record labels and moved to Atlantic, where he released Luvanmusiq in 2007 and OnMyRadio in 2008. Over the years, Musiq Soulchild has collaborated with some great artists including Mary J. Blige, Swizz Beatz, Syleena Johnson, The Roots, Lloyd Banks, Talib Kweli, and Carlos Santana. He's released 9 studio albums (two platinum, two gold), 3 EPs, and many singles and featured artist spots to date. His music has been nominated for 13 Grammy awards, and he won 2001's Best Male R&B Artist from the BET Awards.
