February 27: The Roots

The Roots are a hip hop group, formed in 1987 by Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter and Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Roots are known for a jazzy and eclectic approach to hip-hop, featuring live musical instruments. They have released 11 studio albums with one more on the way in 2019, two EPs, and three collaboration albums (one with John Legend , one with Betty Wright & The Roots , and one with Elvis Costello And The Roots ). The Roots have also broken major records in the music world naming them "Hip-hop's first legitimate band". They are currently the house band for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The Roots have won three GRAMMY Awards and three NAACP Image Awards.
