Usher got robbed! The U Got It Bad singer’s soon to be ex-wife Grace Miguel entered their home to find they were ripped off to the tune of $820,000. It appears to be mostly jewelry, watches, necklaces and finally $20,000 in cash among other things. Was it someone known to Usher and Grace? Did someone get their routine down and know when to strike? Usher, Grace nor anyone else was hurt, and the robbers were long gone before anyone returned home.
Starbucks has the stars talking. After two black businessmen were arrested and escorted out by police while waiting for their third companion, the internet exploded when they learned the manager called police. Kevin Hart says thinking like a CEO the company needed to correct that manager. Will Smith reportedly says it’s not that racism is getting worse, it’s just being filmed. Starbucks CEO has met with the men who, at press time, have only talked with Robin Roberts on GMA publicly. They’ve having called for change, but haven’t elaborated on any of their legal options yet. The manager who called the police is no longer with the Starbucks.
The Braxton sisters are going through it in business and personal life. First, Toni had to kick Tamar off their tour. So what’s going on with Tamar? She’s banned her estranged husband and manager, Vince, from their condo. She also shaved her head. That’s right shaved it. It’s not bad at all though. Meanwhile, she’s appearing quite regularly with Steve Harvey. We’ll see how things shake out. Also, we’re hoping the Braxton’s tour returns to Philly. Stay tuned!
Prince’s autobiography The Beautiful Ones will be out in the fall. The book is named after one of The Purple One’s most popular songs. We’re near the 2 year anniversary of the death of Prince, who was not only a singer/songwriter but actor/director, record label honcho and music publisher. Much has been written about Prince, but we’ll finally get his own words.
It’s time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Grammy winning, platinum selling album The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill. It was Hill’s dramatic first solo effort outside of her longtime membership in The Fugees. Though she’s made other albums, The Miseducation was her landmark. Hill is going on a special anniversary tour, and will appear at Penns Landing’s Festival Pier on Friday, July 13th and tickets are on sale this Friday April 20th. Childish Gambino, a.k.a. Emmy Winning Actor/Director of Atlanta, a.k.a. Donald Glover will both host and be musical guest for Saturday Night Live on May 5th.
Coachella turned into Beychella. Beyonce, who could not perform last year as she was carrying twins, vowed to return in 2018. Queen Bey blew up the long time music festival. First, the rumors were true and she did have over one hundred strong on her show. That included a historically black college/university-themed performance. She also did a New Orleans themed salute, brought out her current touring partner and hubby Jay-Z, they’ll both be in Philly July 30th, and topped it off with a Destiny’s Child Reunion as Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland joined Beyonce on stage. Bey went one step further and created scholarships for several HBCU’s after spotlighting them in her show.
Idris Elba has a sitcom coming to Netflix. The Golden Globe winning actor and longtime star of the BBC series Luther is turning to comedy. Elba is co-creator and co-executive producer of Turn Up Charlie. Elba plays Charlie, a bachelor and DJ who reluctantly becomes a “manny” to a friend’s problem child daughter. No premiere date yet, but Turn Up Charlie begins filming in England in May.
Gabrielle Union signs first look deal with Sony. The actress who’s on this month’s feature and cover for Ebony magazine has a two-year pact which covers TV, cable and digital projects for Sony TV. Union is also filming the pilot to the Bad Boys movie spinoff L.A.’s Finest with Jessica Alba. Union also has a Mother’s Day themed thriller due out called Breaking In. She’s a mom who must save her children being held hostage. Breaking In opens Mother’s Day weekend May 11th.
En Vogue has a new reality show coming to BET. The veteran group has just released new music and video for their Ne-Yo written new single Rocket. En Vogue, created back in 1990 by R&B Producers Foster & McElroy, have enjoyed platinum selling success and incredible popularity to the point of touring and acting opportunities and welcoming new member Actress/Singer Rhona Bennett. There have also been lows like to original members (Dawn Robinson and Maxine Jones) departing, fighting in court for the use of the name, and splinter groups that tried to pop up on the scene. En Vogue has their comeback ready now though. Their new album Electric Café is available this Friday, April 20th and their new BET reality show, Ladies Night, with Salt & Pepa and SWV, is currently in production in Atlanta.
Jackson Family Matriarch Katherine Jackson has suffered a stroke. It’s affected her left side and she’s having trouble seeing and speaking. It happened at her home. Joe Jackson, who also suffered a stroke some years ago, is 89 and Mom Katherine is 87. The couple has been married 70 years. Both are in the same home but different sides of the estate with separate medical teams working each parent. Get well soon to both Mr. and Mrs. Jackson.
We remember former First Lady Barbara Bush. Known for her literacy campaign and being the conscious of the Bush Family, Barbara was widely admired beyond the political field. Her down to earth demeanor was instantly relatable. She called herself the luckiest woman in the world having been both wife of a U.S. President (George H.W. Bush) and two terms later, the mother to a U.S. President (George W. Bush). First Lady Barbara Bush was 92-years old.
We remember former 76ers Hal Greer. The basketball legend carved out his professional career as a fierce competitor. He was a Hall Of Fame jump shooter and was selected to 10 All-Star Teams. The 76ers paid homage to him by wearing his #15 on a black memorial patch. Greer played ten seasons for the Sixers beginning in 1963 and died this week at the age of 81.
Shortly after Mariah Carey revealed she suffers from bi-polar disorder, she was promptly sued….for sexual harassment. The 48-year old singer/songwriter is being sued by Stella, an ex-assistant, for sexual harassment because the singer always walked around her naked. But as a personal assistant, don’t you have to help her get dressed? Stella also claims Mariah is a substance abuser and refuses to take her bi-polar medicine. As of press time, there’s been no response from Carey’s lawyers.
BET has a new original legal drama. In Contempt is a scripted show that focuses on the underfunded but heavily burdened public defender’s office. The relationships, both professional and personal, find their way into court. In Contempt stars Erica Ash (Real Husbands Of Hollywood; Uncle Drew; Survivors’ Remorse), Christian Keyes (Saints & Sinners; Let’s Stay Together), and Richard Lawson (Scream Blacula Scream; Dynasty; All My Children) and airs Tuesdays at 10pm on BET.

Michael B. Jordan is in the midst of filming Creed II in the city of Philadelphia, but he’s also on the cover of the May issue of Men’s Health magazine. Jordan also reveals he doesn’t want to meet his name counterpart, the legendary Michael Jordan, yet. Jordan says he’s motivated by things like not wanting to meet the basketball legend until they both know who the other is and the meeting is on a more equal footing. The actor also says the career he’d prefer to emulate is that of Philly’s own Will Smith, whom he says is killing the game. For now, you can catch Jordan in North America’s all time box office champion Black Panther, in theaters now.

Emmy winning Writer/Actress Lena Waithe is co-starring in Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, which is in theaters now, and Waithe is on the cover of Vanity Fair’s April 2018 edition as a game changer.
Halle Berry and Daniel Craig will team up on the big screen for Kings. The movie is based on the L.A. riots of 1992 following the not guilty verdict for the officers caught on videotape beating the late motorist Rodney King. Berry will play a mom of eight children. Kings will be in theaters April 27th.
The hit Power has gotten some good news from its cable network Starz. The award winning drama starring Omari Hardwick, Joseph Sikora, Naturi Naughton, Lela Loren and, the show’s co-executive producer, Curtis 50 Cent Jackson, was renewed for a six season. 50 Cent is set to direct in that season, but first comes the faith season. And, the fifth season premiere of Power will be Sunday, July 1st at 9pm on Starz.
