Issa Rae, Common, Regina Hall and Amandla Stenberg have all been cast in the upcoming movie The Hate U Give. According to Variety, it's a coming-of-age drama about a 16-year-old girl (Stenberg) "named Starr who grew up in a poverty-stricken area, but now attends a suburban prep school. After she witnesses a police officer shoot her unarmed best friend, she’s torn between her two very different worlds as she tries to speak her truth." Rae will play an activist named April who helps Starr find her voice to speak up. Regina Hall and Common will round out the cast along with Russell Hornsby and Algee Smith. George Tillman Jr. (Soul Food, Notorious) is directing. The Hate U Give is based on the debut novel of the same name by Angela Thomas.
