Grammy-Award winning singer, songwriter, model, poet and actress Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, in Philadelphia, and raised as an only child by her mother and grandmother. She found music first through discovering the poetry of Nikki Giovanni in the 8th grade. Scott also enjoyed writers Octavia Butler and J. California Cooper. Scott worked as a poet and attended Temple University, originally intending to become a teacher. Poetry led to a passion for music and singing, studying jazz and soul greats, and learning the craft largely on her own. Scott started to make major strides in music in 2000, when the debut album, Who Is Jill Scott, went platinum. Soon after, she came back with two albums, Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2 (2004) and The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3 (2007) which both achieved gold status.
Jill Scott didn't stop there - she continues to write songs for other artists. Scott also has shown her skills in acting, starring in movies such as Tyler Perry's Why Did Get Married? series, HBO's series, The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, the recent remake of Steel Magnolias, Get On Up, and Baggage Claim.
