Common is continuing to move the culture forward! The MC/actor won an Emmy award for his song “Letter to the Free,” which was featured in Ava DuVernay’s Netflix documentary 13th.
If you thought that was impressive, you might want to sit down before we share this other piece of news: Common has officially become the first rapper to win an Emmy, Oscar and Grammy. This means that he's just a Tony award away from an EGOT!
Common already has three Grammys including one for his song with John Legend, "Glory," which was featured in DuVernay's Selma. He and Legend won an Oscar for that track, too. Now, Common is closer than he's ever been to joining the EGOT ranks with stars like Whoopi Goldberg, Audrey Hepburn and more. An EGOT “would be a blessing,” Common told Deadline after winning his new Emmy. “I wanted to go to Broadway before I won any awards. I would love to do theater.”
13th is a documentary that explores race and mass incarceration in the United States of America. Keep winning, Common. We're proud of you.
