We remember Dr. Maya Angelou. Born Marguerite Ann Johnson, Angelou's life consisted of music, activism, entertainment, education and, of course, writing. After a traumatic childhood of rape, not speaking for a number of years following the attack and becoming a teenaged mother, Angelou used those life incidents as stepping stones. In the 50's, she was introduced to the world as a calypso singer and actress, but she never abandoned writing. She chronicled the civil rights movement, African American self-esteem and the elections of presidents through both her writing and her participation. Angelou's writing hit an all-time high with her 1969 autobiography I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. The international bestseller pulled no punches describing the challenges and victories in her early life and was the first of seven autobiographies. Angelou, who had toured internationally in plays since the '50's and took up film directing in 1976, became the first African American woman to join the Director's Guild Of America. She also continued acting with appearances in John Singleton's Poetic Justice and Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion. The international acclaim of Angelou's poetry continued to spread after she read a piece for Bill Clinton's first inauguration as President of The United States. One of her last public appearances was being awarded the Presidential Medal Of Freedom from President Barack Obama, who offered his and First Lady Michelle Obama's condolences on Angelou's passing. Dr. Maya Angelou died at the age of 86.
